Fatherhood
is a challenging and demanding responsibility.
Packed schedules, job responsibilities, and “dad
duties” often make it difficult for men to find
opportunities to relax and enjoy solitude with
God.
Downtime for Dads
offers fathers short devotionals to help them
find time in their busy schedules to spend a few
moments reflecting on God’s wisdom and goodness.
It includes thoughtful stories from professional
football and baseball players, respected

dads who understand the demands and
responsibilities of fatherhood. With insight and

trust in God. Their challenging meditations will
inspire men to be better fathers and help them
rely on the power and faithfulness of God as they

Every Sunday brings a new deadline for pastors.
Regardless of the size of the church, there will
be people present who are looking for “a word
from the Lord.”
So, sometime before Sunday morning the pastor
must prepare a spiritual meal for those who will
come expecting to be fed. Trust me. This is a
great responsibility. It is not easy to get ready
for something new to present each week. Still, we
know that God has called us to feed His people.
Just for the record, over the 47 years that I was
in the position of being “chef” for His people, I
averaged twenty hours of preparation for each new
sermon. Sure, a pastor can get by with less. But
like “fast food” does not contain much of
nutritional value in the same way quick sermon
fixes do not generate a lot of healthy spiritual
nourishment.
Sometimes pastors need “sermon seeds” over which
they can pray and let grow in their minds and
hearts. This is especially true of those who are
new to the ministry and in bi-vocational
situations. With that in mind, Beacon Press asked
for a series of preachable sermon outlines. These
are designed to help with the preparation time.
They are starting points that can germinate in
fertile minds.
These books are available at Christian bookstores
everywhere. The cost has intentionally been kept
very affordable. I hope these books will help
pastors put good Sunday dinners on the spiritual
tables of their churches.

Beth Moore writes in the foreword of this book:
“To be perfectly honest, for years I taught and
walked believing in God. It has just been in
recent times that I have truly grasped that we
must no only believe in God---but also believe
God.
Fully implementing this principle of faith has
changed my life.” That statement sets the tone
for this second book of faith stories compiled
and in many cases written by Joyce Williams.
Throughout the chapters the underlying theme is
clearly stated. Although the trials and tests of
life happen, regardless of the circumstances and
hardships, my faith in God holds steady. H can
and will get me through whatever may come across
life’s pathway.

This book was co-authored with DR. DONALD HARVEY,
a clinical psychologist.
Living in a parsonage is like living in a house
with glass walls. Every move the pastoral family
makes is evaluated and critiqued. This can bring
unbearable pressure on that family. How do
pastors handle this? How have others dealt with
these issues?
This book was written by a pastor who lived there
for 47 years and a clinical psychologist who has
vast experience in counseling many who live in
the glass house.
Dr. J. I. Packer writes about this book, “This is
a must-read for every pastoral
couple.”

In
the introduction to this book Joyce is adamant
about cautioning the reader that this is not
another “self-help” book.
She frankly acknowledges that she has tried that

Lord through the quicksand of our lives.

their stories challenge us to believe in Him with
our whole hearts, souls, minds and beings.
Through poems, prose, laughter, tears,
transparency, hope and grace, you will find
absolute reliance on God scrolled across each
page.
The reader will discover the common thread of
faith in our Father that sustains us regardless
of the distresses, disasters, diseases and
devastations of life.
The foreword was written by BARBARA JOHNSON with
an endorsement by JILL BRISCOE. The reader will
find stories by LIZ CURTIS HIGGS, BETH MOORE,
VONETTE BRIGHT, PATSY CLAIRMONT, BEVERLEY LONDON,
along with many other gifted communicators. Local

BROWN, LAUREL DAVIDSON, and the late dear friend
prayer warrior FAYE KOKER.

This is a book written for children.
The setting is the Sea of Galilee, and it is the
story of a fictional lad named Joel who could
have lived in that time when Jesus walked those
shores.
The chapters are stories of events from the New
Testament wrapped around the life of lonely
little Joel. It is an excellent book for child
evangelism.
The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association has
given permission to reprint the brochure that is
used during children’s events at crusades and
festivals to lead a child to the Lord along with
the salvation prayer.
This book is a good “read to” for children ages 3
and up. It is also a good “read by” for older
children. It can be used to lead a child to
Jesus. A child can use this book to lead a friend
to Jesus as well.
